26 Jan Enotrekking: visiting Can Suriol FROM VILAFRANCA on foot

Yes, “enotrekking” is strange term and we probably did make it up, but it is the perfect word to introduce this activity that combines sport, wine and culture.

Our first enotrekking stop is Can Suriol winery, in El Penedès. The route begins at Vilafranca train station, runs through vineyards and ends in the picturesque town of Font Rubí, where, in addition to tasting the wines of the Suriol family, we can admire unique buildings such as the Masia Grabuac, constructed by the well-known modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch.

The route we suggest is simple, flat and attainable for anybody no mater their physical condition or age.You just have to wear good shoes and be willing to walk for around an hour and a half (depending on your pace).

The route

To arrive on time for the visit at Can Suriol winery (they usually start at 11 in the morning), it is best to arrive at Vilafranca del Penedès around 9. As the idea is to drink some wine and do some sport, we suggest leaving the car at home and getting on the R4 line of the Rodalies train. From Barcelona you should consider that the journey takes about 53 minutes, there are trains approximately every 30 minutes and currently the price of a single ticket is 5.5 euros. We cross Vilafranca until we reach the BV-2127 road. Here there is a pedestrian area where you can walk separately from the cars. You will have vineyards on both sides and a beautiful sights to your left. After walking for about 17 minutes, you will reach the village of Les Cabanyes.

In Les Cabanyes we will follow Calle Cinco. We will pass through the Parroquita de Sant Valentí and once we get to the town’s end, the most beautiful part of the walk begins where we will be strolling among vineyards of various wineries and cooperatives of the region.

Following the path we will see the signs to Sant Pau de Grabuac and Suriol
From Cabanyes to Can Suriol there are approximately 3 km that take about 32 min. A little before reaching Can Suriol we will arrive at Ceràmica Baltà and a few meters further on we will find our destination, the Grabuach Castle and Can Suriol.

Apart from making wine, the Suriol family are excellent hosts. They greet us with a welcome drink and then take us to visit Grabuach Castle and explain the history of their family. With a short walk we reach the vineyards where they explain how the organic cultivation of the grape is carried out and its differences with respect to the conventional one. Then we return to the farmhouse and head to the production cellar where they tell us how their wines and cavas are created. Finally, the most awaited moment arrives, the tasting! They introduce us to wines from Can Suriol and their fantastic olive oil.

Perks of the route

  • The vineyards: throughout the walk we can observe the vineyards up close. A nice activity is to repeat the route at different times of the year, this will show us a totally different landscape. The pictures on this post are of the countryside in January and we can find the peasants pruning the vines, all plants devoid of leaves. If, instead, we went in August, the image would be totally different, finding plants full of leaves and with their fruits changing color.
  • Modernist architecture: in addition to the Masia de Grabuac in Font-Rubí, we can complete our visit by spending the afternoon in Vilafranca where we can enjoy countless buildings from the modernist period. To make life easier for tourists, the town hall has already prepared a route.
  • Viniseum: And since we are in Penedés, why not visit this museum entirely dedicated to wine? A tour of its rooms takes us to learn more about the history of wine and its production, but also shows us how art, literature or tradition are related to this drink. General admission is 7 euros and includes the tasting of a selected wine.
